Tourists discovered Björkliden at the start of the last century but it was not until 1926 that Gammelgården and two annexes were used as a mountain resort, after the completion of a deal with the Swedish Railway Company.

This famous mountain area has been a popular destination for one hundred years. Here in ancient Lapland visitors are surrounded by spectacular scenery. Abisko National Park is only 10km from Björkliden and is famous world over for its wildlife, species of rare flowers and its scenery. This is also the start of the 440 kilometre long Kungsleden (The King's Trail), which is Sweden's best known skiing and hiking route. No introduction to the area would be complete without mentioning the midnight sun, which never sets during the summer months, and the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), which weave their magic most visibly during the winter months.
In the summertime Björkliden is a Mecca for mountain hikers, displaying unique high latitude Nordic flora and fauna. Many hikers visit us to enjoy the bird life, mountain flowers and the midnight sun. Others use the area as the starting or finishing point for longer hiking tours.
During the winter months a variety of exciting activities are on offer to visitors including skiing in northern Sweden's largest ski area and experiencing everything from husky dog-sledding rides to cross-country or Nordic skiing and the chance to try telemark skiing, which is a traditional downhill technique using touring skis.
From November until January Björkliden Fjällby offers Orca safaris in the Norwegian fjords. Take the opportunity to see the majestic orcas that gather every year in the northern part of Norway. This area is unique in the world, as it is one of only a few places where they have access to such large quantities of food. We go out by boat to see the orcas in their natural environment.
