The Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventure

Our Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventure offers you THREE different ways to see the northern lights: depending upon the weather and aurora forecast we will hunt for the lights on foot at a nearby teepee, chase the lights in a modern 4×4 van, or ride on a cozy sleigh which is pulled behind a snowmobile to one of our wilderness camps in and around Abisko National Park.

This evening under the stars offers you a fantastic opportunity to learn about the culture & natural history of Lapland and gives you a chance to experience beauty that can only be found in Abisko National Park. During our time together we will discuss the way that locals interact with nature and explore the cultural interpretations of the northern lights that the local inhabitants of the region have believed during the last several centuries. Small groups of 8 guests guarantee a very personal and genuine experience and ensure a safe and comfortable trip into the Arctic environment. 

Included: Rental of camera, tripod, backpack, warm overalls, and head lamp. Warm drink and small snack. Pick up from any hotel in Abisko or Björkliden.

Morning hike in Abisko National Park

Would you like to enjoy a morning hike in the Arctic wilderness with one of the best outfitters in Abisko? Let one of Lights Over Lapland’s professional guides take you for a short, 3-4km guided hike in Abisko National Park! During this spectacular adventure, your guide will lead you down one of the beautiful local trails. A good example is the trail which meanders along the scenic Abisko river canyon. You will wander through an ancient mountain birch forest, enjoy stunning open views of the Abisko river delta, marvel at soaring mountain peaks, take in all the beautiful scenery around the incredible Lake Torneträsk and much more. All of our guides are highly trained and will share their deep pool of knowledge about tracks left behind by our local wildlife, local indigenous people of the region and what it is like to live in the Arctic.

While it is not guaranteed, you may have a chance to see beautiful animals during this trip such as reindeer, mountain hare, foxes, a full range of birds and the ever-majestic Scandinavian moose if luck is on your side! Be sure to bring a camera as this trip gives you an up close and personal experience in all of the most beautiful locations in Abisko National Park! This hike will be led at a very relaxed pace and usually takes between 1.5 and 2 hours to complete. Most of the trip happens on well-trodden, level ground but there can be inclines and loose/drifted snow during the hike. The guide will help anyone navigate any little obstacles, and walking poles can be provided if requested. Please let us know if you have any physical limitations that would make it difficult for you to keep up with a group of ten guests and one guide.

Pick up information: If you are staying in the village of Abisko, please be ready for pick up at your hotel from 9:15 AM. Guests who are staying at STF Abisko Turiststation, please meet your guide in the hotel lobby at 9:30 AM. If you are staying in Björkliden the pickup time is 9:00 AM. If you do not need a pickup, please choose STF Abisko Turiststation as your pickup place and meet us in the hotel lobby of STF Abisko Turiststation at 9:30 AM.

Explore the Icehotel

Your trip starts by meeting your guide and taking the journey through the mountains and into the forests of magical Swedish Lapland. On arrival at the ICEHOTEL you will receive your entrance ticket and be able to explore the worlds first hotel made completely from ice!

Marvel at the amazing individually sculpted Art Suites, Ice Rooms and Ice Church whilst learning about how this one-of-a-kind hotel is designed and created each year . Finally head to the Ice Bar to enjoy one of the coolest drinks you will probably ever have!

Following the tour you will have the chance to have lunch in the comfortable restaurant, take a coffee in the stylish bar or buy some souvenirs from your experience at this truly amazing hotel, before going back to Abisko and Björkliden.

Included: Round trip transportation from your hotel in Abisko/Björkliden to Jukkasjärvi outside of Kiruna, where the Icehotel is located. Entrance ticket to the Icehotel. Lunch is not included but can be purchased in the Icehotel restaurant for an additional cost.

Additional information: It is important that you wear warm clothes, hats and gloves as well
as warm insulated winter boots for your feet. The temperature inside the Icehotel is always -5 C.

Visit the Sami & Reindeer in Jukkasjärvi

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity allows you to visit Kiruna’s finest open air museum which is dedicated to and run by Swedish Lapland’s local indigenous people – the Sami. This exciting day trip will give you firsthand access to Sami handicrafts and to top it all off – you will get to experience the amazing lifestyle of the Sámi people and to get up close &personal, inside an authentic corral with Lapland’s most iconic creature – the reindeer.

The open-air museum will teach you all you could ever want to know about Sami culture focusing on how traditional buildings are created, Sami lifestyle and how the Sami people interact with the local environment. You can even purchase a bag of Arctic moss and feed the reindeer which creates the perfect environment of a once in a lifetime photograph with these majestic creatures!

All of this excitement will most certainly make you hungry! This visit includes access to a lovely café which is located inside of a cozy wooden teepee which is owned and operated by the local Sami community. Warm drinks, sandwiches and classic Swedish Fika is available for purchase.

Included: Round trip transportation from your hotel in Abisko/Björkliden to Jukkasjärvi outside of Kiruna, where Nutti Sámi Siida is located. Entrance ticket to the Nutti Sami Sida open air museum, Café Sápmi & Handicraft shop. Time to get up close and personal with the reindeer.

Dogsledding excursion to Kiruna

Lights Over Lapland and Kiruna Dog Sled’s owners have been friends for nearly 15 years, and both companies put our guest experience’s during our tours as a top priority. With this in mind, we have created a 10 – 12 KM circuit which crosses through some of the most scenic Arctic wilderness in the area that is sure to help you create spectacular memories of your own mushing adventure during your time in our care. During the dog sledding adventure, your professional musher/guide will drive a sled which accommodates up to four guests. Having a professional musher drive the sled ensures the highest levels of safety for our guests, and allows healthy guests of nearly all levels of physical ability to enjoy this once in a lifetime dog sledding adventure. While your professional musher controls the team of dogs, you can sit back, relax, take LOTS of pictures and enjoy every second of your time in the Arctic wilderness.

Approximately halfway through the dog sledding adventure, we will stop at our remote Arctic wilderness camp where your guide will prepare a warm fire, piping hot drinks and classic Swedish Fika. An example of what might be served is a warm cup of coffee or tea and steaming cinnamon rolls. During this break we encourage you to spend some quality one on one time with your dogs as they absolutely love to cuddle and enjoy a belly rub in exchange for providing you with the thrill of riding behind them in a classic dog sledding adventure. After you have had a chance to relax by the fire, we will hop back on the dog sled and continue with our 10 – 12 KM circuit.

Included: Round trip transportation from your hotel in Abisko or Björkliden to the dogsledding camp near Kiruna. Warm overalls, winter boots, hats and gloves. Warm drink and cinnamon bun is included but please bring your own lunch. Lunch is not included nor available for purchase at the dogsledding camp so we highly recommend that you bring a packed lunch on this excursion.

Additional information: You may have to share a sled with other people. We allow up to 4 people per sled. The actual time on the sled is approximately 2 x 30 minutes but can be slightly shorter or longer depending on snow conditions.

Pick up information: If you are staying in Björkliden the pickup time is 9:00 AM. If you are staying in Abisko, please be ready for pick up at your hotel from 9:15 AM.

Return times: Departing from Oinakka 2:15 PM. All guests returned to their hotels by 4:00 PM.
