Winter and the Polar Night - When the light rests in Björkliden.

Polar night

Polar night, mountains and winter freedom

In Björkliden, located far above the Arctic Circle, one of nature's most dramatic spectacles takes place every winter: the polar night. For several weeks in December and January, the sun never rises above the horizon. But don't be fooled by the word night - the polar night in Björkliden is more like a symphony of colors in blue, violet and gold.

To visit Björkliden during the polar night is to enter a world of total silence and magnificence. It is a time for reflection, where the sparse light makes every northern light and every star a thousand times brighter. Here you will experience the mountain in its most honest and beautiful rest.

We offer activities that take you right into the heart of the Arctic wilderness to a world few get to experience

Polar night

Why is it polar night?

This phenomenon is due to the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth's axis. During the winter months, the northern hemisphere tilts away from the sun. The further north you are, the longer the period when the Earth's own curvature completely shades us from the sun's direct rays.

Despite the sun being hidden, a magical phenomenon called ”Kaamos” or blue light occurs. Because the sun is just below the horizon, the rays of light are refracted in the atmosphere, coloring the mountain world in a soft, electric blue hue. It is also during this time that the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) dance most intensely over Lapporten and Torneträsk.

Life in the animal world: Adaptation and survival

As the light retreats and the cold locks its grip on the mountain, the animal kingdom switches to a life of austerity and extreme specialization. For those who remain in Björkliden during the polar night, it's all about saving energy and harnessing the insulating power of snow. Far below the sparkling blanket, in the so-called subnival layer between ground and snow, voles and small rodents live in a sheltered world where the temperature stays around zero despite the storms roaring above.

Up on the surface, the ptarmigan and Arctic hare have changed into their chalk-white winter plumage, a transformation that not only provides vital camouflage but also denser, more hollow insulation against the biting cold. Meanwhile, the reindeer move methodically across the plains, using their broad hooves as both snowshoes and shovels to reach the coveted lichen deep in the snow.

The polar night and winter are a silent but intense struggle, where the architecture of nature and the adaptability of animals work together to survive the darkest months until the return of the sun.
