For several weeks in December and January, the sun never rises above the horizon. Why is it polar night?
This phenomenon is due to the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth's axis. During the winter months, the northern hemisphere tilts away from the sun. The further north you are, the longer the period when the Earth's own curvature completely shades us from the sun's direct rays.
Despite the sun being hidden, a magical phenomenon called ”Kaamos” or blue light occurs. Because the sun is just below the horizon, the rays of light are refracted in the atmosphere, coloring the mountain world in a soft, electric blue hue. It is also during this time that the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) dance most intensely over Lapporten and Torneträsk.

Meanwhile, the reindeer move methodically across the plains, using their broad hooves as both snowshoes and shovels to reach the coveted lichen deep in the snow.
