Summer and the midnight sun

During the summer in Björkliden the sun never sets.

The midnight sun phenomenon is a nature experience that defies our senses. Between late May and mid-July, Björkliden is in a position where the Sun never sets below the horizon. This is due to the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth's axis during the summer, when the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun to such an extent that even the Earth's own curvature is unable to shade us at night.

Instead of going down, the sun slowly descends towards the north, touches the mountain peaks and then starts to rise again. This creates a ”golden hour” that lasts for several hours. The light becomes soft, warm and amber, adding magical depth to the landscape and making Lapporten look like something out of a fairy tale. It's a time when you can start a hike at 11pm and reach your destination in broad daylight - a sense of freedom that's hard to describe until you've experienced it.

Summer in Björkliden

Nature's prolonged and intense flowering

When the sun is blazing every hour of the day, the flora responds with an explosion of growth, but in a way that fools the eye. In Björkliden, one often experiences the feeling of a never ending pre-summer; while the flowers down at Torneträsk is at the end of their bloom, the same species are in full bud just a few hundred meters up. As the snow melts gradually at different rates in ravines and on north-facing slopes, spring ”migrates” up the mountain. This means that you can enjoy the new flowers and that early summer feeling for two to three months - it's like a perpetual renewal that follows the meltwater streams upwards.

The calcareous soil of the Nuolja mountain serves as a natural garden for rare mountain plants. The tiny white mountain daisy covers large areas like a snowy blanket of flowers, while the deep pink heather lines the paths. Along the icy streams, fed by melting glacier water, the stately Nordic wolfsbane rises. It's an intense race against the clock, but thanks to the great differences in altitude, we get to enjoy the flowers for much longer than you might think.
