Rental car in Kiruna

Traveling by car to Björkliden is an experience in itself. As soon as you leave Kiruna, the horizon begins to change. The quiet mountain forest opens up and the green mountain slopes in the west become increasingly dominant.

One of the highlights of the trip is the view of Torneträsk, one of Sweden's largest and deepest lakes. The road winds along the southern shore of the lake, offering miles of views of the crystal clear water, reflecting the sky and mountains in the summer light, with steep mountain walls plunging into the depths on the other side.

As you approach Abisko and Björkliden, perhaps Sweden's most photographed subject reveals itself: Lapporten (Čuonjávággi). The U-shaped valley lies there like a magnificent gateway in the landscape, watching over travelers, bathed in the soft glow of the midnight sun.

At Kiruna Airport you can rent a car. If you stay with us in Björkliden (or Riksgränsen), you also get a 15% discount with AVIS. At the time of booking, enter code S303712 - either by phone or online. Remember that you cannot use the discount code afterwards, only at the time of booking. Car rental

Rent a car at Evenes airport

Landing in Evenes and getting in the car to Björkliden is like starting a movie scene. This journey takes you through a landscape that constantly changes character - from dramatic Norwegian coasts to barren, vast mountain massifs.

You meander along glittering fjords where mountains rise vertically out of the turquoise water. The views across the Ofotfjord are magnificent, and the bridge over to Narvik gives a sense of freedom. After passing Narvik, the climb begins towards Riksgränsen and the mighty ascent up Björnfjell. This is where the landscape really changes. The dense vegetation thins out and is replaced by a barren, Arctic high mountain landscape.

From Evenes you can easily rent a car to get to Björkliden. The journey takes about 2 hours depending on the road conditions. We recommend that you check that the roads are open. Sometimes they are closed due to storms when traveling over the Norwegian-Swedish mountains. More information can be found on the website of the Swedish Transport Administration and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

Driving through the Arctic landscape - A guide to safe driving

The journey along the E10 between the sea in Narvik and the mountain peaks of Björkliden is spectacular, especially in summer when the landscape is bathed in light and the views stretch for miles. At the same time, the mountain environment is unpredictable - the weather can change quickly and place new demands on you as a driver. To make your journey as safe and enjoyable as possible, there are a few things to keep in mind before you get behind the wheel.

Keep track of road conditions

Even in summer, roads can be affected by weather and maintenance work. Heavy rain can make the road surface slippery, cause water accumulation or, in rare cases, minor landslides and stones on the road. Always check the current road conditions before setting off

Road safety in the mountains

The roads wind through the mountain landscape with sharp curves, changes in level and sometimes narrow sections. Adapt your speed to the conditions and be aware that visibility may be limited, especially in fog or rain. Heavy vehicles are common along the route - give them plenty of room and avoid stressful overtaking.

Checklist for your car trip

  • Clothing by weather
Even in summer, temperatures in the mountains can change quickly. Always carry an extra sweater or jacket in case you need to stop along the way.

  • Fuel and planning
Distances can be long between service stations. Make sure you have enough fuel and plan your trip in advance.

  • Wildlife Hazards
Reindeer and moose move freely in the area and are often seen along or on the road - even in the middle of the day. Reduce your speed in unfenced areas and be prepared for sudden encounters.

Driving through the mountains in summer is part of the experience - a journey where the route is as memorable as the destination. By taking it easy and being considerate of both nature and the rapid changes in the weather, you'll ensure that the journey is as safe and magnificent as the landscape around you.
