25. The Lookout Cabin

Welcome to the bare mountain!

From here, you’ve just left the tree line behind you. Take a moment to rest and enjoy the absolutely fantastic view of Abisko, Nuolja, Torneträsk, and the dramatic Norwegian mountain range stretching along the other side of the lake.

Bonus on the trip:  At the lookout point, you can pick up a small piece of the ore-rich rock from the Kiruna Mountains.

How to get there
  1. Start at the hotel. Begin by walking up the gravel road toward the mountain on the other side of the parking lot.
  2. Follow the golf course. Continue up the hill and pass the first few holes. In the distance, you can see the lookout cabin at the top of the mountain.
  3. Turn right up the hill. Once you've walked up the slope and passed the first holes, turn immediately right to head up the hill.
  4. Enjoy the view. When you arrive at the little lookout cabin, take a moment to enjoy the view! The cabin isn’t normally open to the public—but it usually offers a bit of shelter at one of its four corners on windy days.

26. The Mosquito Pavilion

A Moment for Reflection

Want to go on a historical outing with beautiful views? In that case, a walk down to the Myggpaviljongen in the Björkliden neighborhood is just perfect! The pavilion is intended for residents of the area, but in front of it—with a panoramic view of Lake Torneträsk—there is a bench and a commemorative plaque honoring the mountain infantry units that trained up here during World War II until the early 2000s.

Take a seat, listen to the birdsong in the birch forest, and enjoy the grandeur of Torneträsk!

Bonus on the trip: The pavilion was built in 1934 and is a historic site featuring an interesting commemorative plaque from the Kiruna Hunter School.

How to get there
  1. Take a walk down to the train station. There, you can cross the tracks safely.
  2. Follow the mailboxes. Once you've crossed the railroad tracks, you'll see a row of mailboxes; follow them around the corner of the house.
  3. Turn left onto the gravel road. Immediately after you round the corner of the house, there is a smaller gravel road. Follow it all the way until you see the mosquito pavilion inside the grove on the left.
  4. Enjoy the view. In the distance, you'll see a bench on the rocky outcrop.

Tip! The Mosquito Pavilion is a wonderful place to watch the midnight sun, with its warm rays shining on the mountain peaks and Lapporten.

27. The Midnight Sun Cairn

Where the Midnight Sun is at its best

Do you have some extra energy and want to find the absolute best spot to experience the midnight sun? Then we highly recommend a trip up to the Midnight Sun Cairn! At the stroke of midnight, the sun stands directly over Pålnoviken in Torneträsk and the Norwegian Sördalen—an absolutely incredible canyon with steep cliff walls.

Bonus on the trip: Keep your eyes peeled—there’s a good chance you’ll find golden cloudberries along the way!

How to get there
  1. Start at the hotel. Walk up the gravel path toward the golf course and the first tee.
  2. Find the sign. Continue along the gravel road until you see a small information sign in English about the Låktatjåkko mountain station.
  3. Take the red trail. Turn left onto the clearly marked path with red-marked cairns.
  4. After about 500 meters, the cairns are marked with both red and yellow. Follow the yellow markings as they turn to the right.
  5. Find the cairn. Soon you’ll see a cairn and a sign at the top of a hill—that’s the Midnight Sun Cairn. Feel free to write something in the guestbook!

28. Around the Hotel

The best view with the least effort

Are you short on time, or do your legs feel like jelly after a long day in the mountains? Sometimes the simplest things are the very best. From here, you’ll get the most iconic view, with the majestic Lapporten perfectly framed in the background.

Bonus on the trip: The absolute minimum effort for a spectacular, breathtaking view!

How to get there
  • Take a nice walk right around the hotel building in any direction to the back.

29. The Golf Hut

It's super cozy!

Hidden away at the fourth hole on the golf course is a super cozy little wooden cabin. It’s located right at the tree line and is perfect for a lovely coffee break with a view of Lake Torneträsk. Take a seat at the large outdoor stone table or go inside and cozy up on the benches around the fireplace. There’s firewood on site if you need it! (Just remember to extinguish the fire properly when you’re done and check for any local fire bans.).

Bonus on the trip: Perfect shelter and the option to build a fire if the weather were to change.

  1. Head toward the swimming lake. Follow the gravel road up toward the golf course and Låktatjåkko until you reach the swimming lake.
  2. Turn right. At the swimming lake, turn right and follow the well-trodden path.
  3. Look out from the tee. From the tee on the golf course for hole four, look out toward the trees—that’s where you’ll see the teepee!
  4. Follow the fairway. Walk along the right side of the fairway for the fourth hole all the way to the hut. Be aware of any tee shots or golfers and keep your distance.

30. Gohpasjohka

Up into the mountains above the tree line

This part requires a bit more effort, but for those who still have energy left, this viewpoint is an absolute must-see. It’s a magical, natural plateau about 1.5 km from the hotel where you can settle down among dwarf birches and lingonberry bushes. The mountain birch forest higher up provides nice shelter from the mountain wind. Would you like to continue? The trail goes all the way across Nuolja all the way to Abisko!

Bonus on the trip: You’ll hike through a veritable ”jungle” of mountain vegetation that at times rivals any flower meadow, and there’s a good chance you’ll find both fresh blueberries and lingonberries!

How to get there
  1. Across the stream. Cross the ”Teknikbacken” ski slope toward Rakkaskåtan and cross the stream over the bridge.
  2. Through the birch forest. On the other side of the stream, follow the trail marked with red signs, which will take you through the lush birch forest.
  3. Follow the gravel road. The trail leads out onto a gravel road that goes uphill—follow it!
  4. Cross the open area. When you reach a wooden fence and an open area, walk straight across it.
  5. The last stretch. The trail continues into the forest on the other side. After about 200 meters, you’ll reach the plateau and a small cairn next to the stream.
