Skiing in Björkliden

As you wind your way down the slopes, the crisp mountain air bites into your cheeks, a reminder that you live here and now

Björkliden is not just a destination - it's a promise of total freedom.

Up here, where the roads end and the real mountains begin, the noise of everyday life is erased by a silence so palpable that it thunders. Below, the steel-gray ice of Torneträsk spreads out, so powerful that it makes the world feel both infinite and small at the same time. As you wind your way down the slopes, the crisp mountain air bites into your cheeks, a reminder that you live here and now.

Here, skiing is not about counting turns, but about conquering the moment. It's that second of total focus before you throw yourself down, where the lactic acid in your legs and the wind in your face merge into a feeling of being always free - this is skiing in Björkliden.

Off-piste - an extraordinary experience

There is a moment, just before you make the first turn, when everything stops. You're standing on top of an Arctic landscape where the cold wind is biting your cheeks and the silence is so complete that you can hear your own heartbeat.

Skiing off-piste in an Arctic climate is like floating on clouds. Beneath your skis are layers of snow shaped by wind and cold, and in front of you is an endless white canvas. Once you tip over the edge, the silence is replaced by a soft swish - that sound of perfect cold smoke swirling around your knees.

Here you are forever free. There are no arrows, no barriers, just you, your line and the raw power of nature. It's a playfulness that borders on reverence; a reminder that we are just guests in a world ruled by the elements.

10 safety tips

for off-piste outside the ski system.

Here you are forever free. There are no arrows, no barriers, just you, your line and the raw power of nature.

The secret to enjoying the Arctic mountains is half technique and half respect. Here are 10 tips for a safer off-piste experience:

  1. Equipment is key - Never go without a transceiver (avalanche beacon), probe and shovel. Make sure you not only carry them, but know exactly how to use them under stress. First aid, a windsock, map and compass are also good to have.
  2. Always read the day's local avalanche forecast before heading out. On lavinprognoser.se there are also good and in-depth guides on how to read the avalanche forecast in the best way and basic avalanche theory.
  3. Dress according to the ”layer upon layer” principle - the Arctic climate is fickle. If you sweat on the way up, you risk freezing quickly at rest. Wool closest to the body is a strong recommendation.
  4. Never travel alone! Share the joy - and the safety - and always have a partner within sight and sound. Leave a travel message with someone who knows where you are planning to go, such as a friend or the reception of your accommodation.
  5. Plan your route before you start skiing - identify ”safe spots” where you can stop outside any avalanche paths or fall lines.
  6. Respect the rapid changes in the weather - whiteouts can happen in minutes in the mountains. Always have a plan for getting home if conditions change during your trip.
  7. Keep an eye out for terrain traps - pay attention to hollows, ravines or cliffs where snow can accumulate or where it is difficult to get out if something happens.
  8. Energy and fluids - the cold tricks your body into thinking it's not thirsty. Bring a thermos of hot drinks and quick energy to stay focused and sharp throughout the day.
  9. Get to know your equipment - test that your binding releases properly and that your crampons (if you're hiking) attach properly even in extreme cold.
  10. Listen to your gut - the mountain will still be there tomorrow. If the snow feels unstable or visibility is too poor - turn around and celebrate the decision with a coffee in the lounge instead.
