Train
Get on the train in the evening in Stockholm or Gothenburg and wake up in a fantastic mountain environment the next day at lunchtime. SJ operates the route between Stockholm and Björkliden, which takes about 18 hours. From the train station in Björkliden it is about 1km walk to Hotell Fjället.

Flight via Kiruna
The flight from Stockholm to Kiruna takes about 90 minutes. From Kiruna, you can continue your journey to Björkliden by bus, train, or car. The transfer between Kiruna and Björkliden also takes about 90 minutes, so the total travel time from Stockholm to Björkliden is approximately three hours.

Traveling by car to Björkliden during the fall and early winter is a truly special experience. As you leave Kiruna, the landscape changes rapidly—the mountain birch forest bursts with vibrant fall colors before gradually being blanketed in the first crisp, fresh snow.
One of the absolute highlights of the trip is the view of Lake Torneträsk. The road winds along the lake’s southern shore and offers a view stretching for miles across the dark, crystal-clear water that reflects the dramatic, frost-covered mountain walls. As you approach Abisko and Björkliden, Lapporten (Čuonjávággi) emerges as a magnificent gateway to the landscape—at this time of year often dusted with snow and shimmering in the crisp autumn light or the first northern lights of twilight.

Flying into Kiruna is the most common way to get here. During the fall and early winter, you can choose between comfortable buses and the classic mountain train.
Bus
Kiruna Bus: This is often the easiest option, since you don't have to transfer in downtown Kiruna. Kiruna Buss operates a shuttle service almost daily, except on Saturdays. The bus picks up passengers directly at the terminal at Kiruna Airport and drop you off at Björkliden Hotel Fjället or Björkliden station house. Book via Tagbokningen.se

Traveling from Evenes Airport to Björkliden mountain village is one of the most spectacular ways to reach us. You leave the Norwegian fjords and climb straight up into the Arctic mountains. Here are your best options for a trip without a rental car:
Step 1: Airport shuttle to Narvik (FB82 aerobuses) The bus departs directly from the terminal and takes you to downtown Narvik in about 50–60 minutes. Tips: Ask the driver to drop you off near the train station (Narvik station). Otherwise, the Quality Hotel Grand Narvik stop is about a 3-minute walk from the station.
Step 2: Take a train or bus over the mountains to Björkliden
Arctic Train: Travels along the historic Ofot Railway and features panoramic windows for the best possible views of the fall scenery and the fjords. Tickets can be purchased at arctictrain.com.
SJ trains on the Malmbanan: An affordable and safe option with daily service to Sweden. Book at sj.se.
Shuttle Bus (Kiruna Buss): Kiruna Buss operates the route between Narvik Station and Kiruna Airport, stopping at Björkliden during the season, and makes stops at Riksgränsen, Björkliden, and Abisko along the way. Reservations: Seats should be Purchase tickets at tagbokningen.se to guarantee space.
Good to know: The Björkliden station is located about 1 kilometer from the mountain village and Hotel Fjället. You can arrange luggage transport by calling the front desk and providing your arrival time at the bus stop; from there, it’s a short but brisk walk up the hill—a perfect start to your mountain adventure!

The drive along the E10 is spectacular, especially in the fall when the landscape is ablaze with color and in early winter when the first snow has fallen. At the same time, the Arctic climate places high demands on you as a driver. The weather changes rapidly from rain to slippery conditions and slush. To make your trip as safe and comfortable as possible, there are a few things to keep in mind before you get behind the wheel.

Road safety in the mountains
Road conditions in the north demand caution. Even if the road looks clear, ”black ice” can make the surface as slippery as glass. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you—the braking distance is significantly longer than on dry pavement. Also keep in mind that heavy trucks are common on this stretch of road; give trucks plenty of space and avoid risky passing maneuvers on winding sections.
Checklist for your car trip
Winter Tires & Road Conditions: Early fall and winter can bring unexpected black ice and snow even early in the season. Make sure your car has good winter tires (preferably studded) and always check road conditions before setting out via the Swedish Transport Administration and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
Adjust the speed: The roads are winding, with curves and changes in elevation. Keep your distance and be aware that visibility can quickly deteriorate in fog, snow flurries, or darkness. Heavy ore and freight trucks often travel along this road—give them plenty of space.
Warm clothes: Pack warm clothes, a hat, mittens, and a blanket to keep in the train car in case you have to stand.
Fuel & Charging: The distances between gas stations are long. Never drive with a low fuel level or low battery, and make sure your cell phone is fully charged and that you have an extra power bank.
Danger from wildlife: In the fall, reindeer and moose move about a great deal along and on the roads. They are hard to see at dusk and in the dark—slow down and be extra careful. Other wildlife, such as badgers, hares, and more, are also found in the area. It’s said that you’ll pass an even-toed ungulate every 300 meters up here.

Once you arrive, you’ll step off the train at one of Sweden’s highest-altitude train stations, with Lapporten standing proudly in the background.
