Panoramic View Points

You don’t need to embark on miles-long treks to experience the grandeur of the mountains. One of the reasons Björkliden’s facility is located precisely where it is, is because of the views.

The hotel is already 500 meters above sea level, and the bare mountain is just a mere 50 meters higher with an endless vista. Here, we present some of our top tips for enjoying the view.

25. View point

One of the closest and most classic spots is located about 500 meters, or a 10-15 minute walk, from the hotel.

You walk up the gravel road that starts at the hotel, past the first holes of the golf course, up the hill, and immediately turn right up onto the mound. You will then find yourself at a small, flat-roofed house. From here, you have just reached the bare mountain (kalfjället) and have a fantastic view of Abisko, Njulla, Lake Torneträsk, and the Norwegian mountain range on the other side of the lake.

    FACTS

    M.a.s.l.:

       540 m.

    Bonus:

At the viewpoint, you can pick up a small piece of the ore-rich stone from the Kiruna mountains.

26. Mosquito Pavilion

If you’re keen on a short walk with a historical destination and a view, you can head down to the Mosquito Pavilion in Björkliden village.

”Tip: If you’re interested in more history from the time of strong border defense, there’s a small museum to visit, the Abisko Border Defense Museum.”

You walk down to the railway station, cross the tracks, and go straight along the mailboxes on the road you encounter on the other side. After rounding the red houses, turn left at the first intersection. At the end of the road, you’ll see the Mosquito Pavilion up to your left. The pavilion itself is closed, but in front of it, facing the lake, there’s a plaque in memory of World War II, and there’s a bench for a pause and reflection. As you sit there, you can gaze over the magnificence of Lake Torneträsk while enjoying the birdsong in the birch forest.

    FACTS

    M.a.s.l.:

       400 m.

    Bonus:

The Mosquito Pavilion was built in 1934 and is a historic site with a commemorative plaque from the Ranger School in Kiruna.

27. Midnight Sun Cairn

If you have a bit more restlessness in your legs or want to reach the point where the midnight sun is best experienced, we recommend a walk up to the Midnight Sun Cairn.

You start at the hotel and walk up the gravel road towards the golf course and the first tee. Continue up the gravel road to a smaller information sign about Låktatjåkko Mountain Station in English. This tour is also described here. Follow this clear path with red-marked cairns that goes to the left from the gravel road. After about 500 m, the cairns are marked with red and yellow. Follow the yellow marking that turns off to the right. You will soon see the hill with a cairn and a sign on it. At the stroke of midnight, the sun stands directly over Pålnoviken in Torneträsk and the Norwegian Sördalen, which is a canyon with steep cliff faces.

28. Around the Hotel

If you only have a short moment to spare or your legs are truly tired, a walk around the corner might be perfect. Our hotel has a fantastic view, and if you go around to the back, you can get a classic photograph with Lapporten in the background.

    FACTS

    M.a.s.l.:

       500 m.

    Bonus:

       Minimum effort for the view.

29. Golf Hut

At hole number four on our golf course, there is a small wooden hut. It’s situated with a view over Lake Torneträsk, right at the treeline, and is perfect for a fika break. You can choose to sit down at the large stone table outdoors or go inside and sit on the benches around the fireplace. There’s wood for a fire on a rainy day, but remember to extinguish it properly when you leave the hut.

To get to the hut, follow the gravel road up towards Låkta until you reach Badsjön (the bathing lake). At Badsjön, turn right, and on the small hill, near the tee, if you look closely, you can spot the hut among the trees. To reach the hut, walk along the right edge of the fairway for hole four.

    FACTS

    M.a.s.l.:

       530 m.

    Bonus:

Opportunity to make a fire and go inside in case of bad weather.

30. Gohpasjohka

To reach this viewpoint, a slightly longer walk is required, but if you have some energy in your legs, it’s well worth the stroll. Perhaps you’ll even be rewarded along the way with fresh blueberries and lingonberries. It’s a natural plateau halfway up the path that runs along Gohpasjohka stream, about 1.5 km from the hotel. On the plateau, you can sit down among dwarf birch and lingonberry bushes, while the mountain birch forest higher up provides some shelter from any wind.

To get here, follow the path from the hotel, over the ski slope and the stream. On the other side of the stream, there’s a path that takes you through a birch forest; follow it until you come out onto a gravel road that goes uphill. Follow the gravel road until you reach a wooden fence and an open area, which you then cross. The path continues on the other side in the forest, and after about 200 meters, you’ll reach the plateau and a small cairn. The path continues uphill and all the way over Njúlla to Abisko.
