Safety, common sense and etiquette

Good Things to Pack for a Hike

First aid kit, compass, map of the current area (Fjällkarta Björkliden 1:50,000 or Calazo Kebnekaisefjällen 1:100,000 / High Alpine Abisko – Riksgränsen 1:25,000), knife/multi-tool, seat pad, extra warm layers (warm sweater, jacket), rain gear, hat, gloves, snacks/fika (coffee break/light meal), hot beverage, kuksa (traditional wooden cup), mountain flora guide.

Mountain Etiquette and Common Sense

The Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten) applies, meaning you can camp with your tent out in nature, and eat berries and mushrooms, but remember that some flowers up here are protected.

Special rules apply in national parks. If you’re going to the parks, check what applies in each respective park.

Leave no trace. Take all your trash with you and leave the mountain as it was when you arrived. Many people move through the mountains, and everyone wants to enjoy the same beautiful views. If you encounter someone else’s trash, it is encouraged to bring that along as well and throw it in the nearest bin you see.

Show consideration for animals and nature. There are many types of animals in the mountains, and they deserve respect. If you see reindeer herds, they might not be afraid of people, but they don’t want to be disturbed, so keep your distance. The same applies to nesting birds and bird nests; keep your distance.

Toilet visits are unavoidable. If you need to relieve yourself, remember to leave as little trace as possible. Cover with stones or dig it down. If you have toilet paper, you can burn it or take it with you, as paper takes several years to decompose due to the cold climate.

Tips for an enjoyable stay in the mountains

The weather in the mountains changes quickly. Even if it’s glorious sunshine when you leave the village, we still recommend bringing an extra warm layer and rain gear. The weather gods might bring cold winds, dense fog, and even sleet, even during the late summer months. To make your hiking trip a bit more interesting, you can buy small, handy pocket guides on the flora & fauna that can be spotted in the mountains. Maps, compasses, and books can be purchased at the sports shop/reception. Also, keep in mind that mobile coverage varies here in the mountains and isn’t always reliable.

If you’re unsure about the day’s weather, suitable packing, time required, or anything else concerning your upcoming adventure, don’t hesitate to ask at the reception or one of our guides in the sports shop. In the sports shop, you can also buy maps and compasses if you left yours at home. This is also where you book activities and guided tours. You can see our bookable activities under “Activities.” We recommend 1-2 guided activities during your stay at Björkliden Fjällby to get the absolute maximum out of what our surroundings have to offer. At the sports shop, you can also buy fishing licenses, rent boots, and rent mountain bikes. You can also just pop in and check out the latest gear!

Should you be unsure of your way or need help, contact the reception at +46 980-641 00.
