FOR FAMILIES & CHILDREN

Summer and the mountains are made for play and energetic fun. Here are some activity suggestions suitable for younger ones, both for a nice, sunny day and some indoor activities to do when the weather doesn’t allow for outdoor adventures. Please also look at some of the tours described under the hiking section; many of them are excellent for smaller legs too.

31. Fjälle’s trail

Are you curious and love animals and nature? Then you should try Fjälle’s Trail! Fjälle is our lemming mascot, and he has put together a small trail in the area around the hotel where you pass small information boxes and can learn more about his various friends, including the lynx, the hare, and the reindeer. It’s also a great trail to follow if you want to look for some of the smaller animals that live in the mountains.

32. Stone Skipping

When it’s too cold for swimming, you can still have fun by the water. The beach down by Lake Torneträsk and Silverfallet (Silver Falls) is full of fantastic stone-skipping stones of all sizes. One might think it’s artificial, but the stones have been shaped by the water’s movement, and the rocks here are formed in layers and readily break into flat pieces. Who can get 5 skips on the water? You follow the path down along Rákkasjohka stream to reach the beach.

”Did you know that?
The record for stone skipping is 88 skips, and it was originally a science for making cannonballs bounce on water!”

33. Mini golf & Swing

In the middle of the cabins in the cabin village lies our mini golf course, well-suited for a family showdown. Right next to the course is everyone’s favorite activity, swings! You can borrow clubs and balls at the reception.

34. Balance, Jump & Lasso Throw

If you have a bit of restless energy, there’s a large trampoline, an obstacle course, and a slackline on the lawn outside the hotel. Who can complete the obstacle course the fastest, or who can walk the most steps on the line? No one knows until you’ve tried. Outside the hotel, there’s also an opportunity to practice your lasso throwing on our homemade reindeer. You can borrow a lasso and instructions for free at the sports shop.

35. At the Hotel

PING PONG & FOOSBALL

On the lower floor beneath the lobby, there’s a ping-pong table and a foosball game. You can borrow rackets and balls at the reception and challenge each other. If there are several of you, perhaps round-robin ping-pong could be a challenge?

BOARD GAMES

The reception has several board games for loan if the days get long. Ask about their assortment and challenge the family.

PLAYROOM

If the longing for toys at home becomes too great or if it’s time for a story, you can visit the playroom located next to the lobby at the Hotel. Here you’ll find toys and Lego, as well as storybooks.

ICE CREAM & FIKA

In the Lobby Bar, we serve both ice cream for warm days and hot chocolate, as well as pastries to munch on after your adventures.

Family Hike with Lift

If you’re looking for a slightly bigger adventure but don’t want to tire out smaller legs, the chairlift in Abisko can be a good option. The whole family can experience the grandeur of the mountain world without having to struggle up a mountain peak on their own. There are several variations of the tour you can do, and you can adapt it to what best suits your family. The lift starts at Abisko Tourist Station and takes you up to 900 meters above sea level, leaving you with 264 meters of elevation gain and about 1.8 km left to the summit of Njulla. You can choose to take the lift down, walk down towards Abisko, or walk back home to Björkliden. For the chairlift’s opening hours, check STF Abisko’s website or call their reception at 010-190 24 00. If you don’t want to hike along the Rallarleden to Abisko, you can get there by your own car, train, or bus.

Naturum in Abisko

If you’re on an excursion to Abisko, a visit to the National Park’s Naturum is a nice stop. It’s located right next to STF Tourist Station and is full of information about the nature up here. The main exhibition is about the national park, what’s there today, and how it has changed over the years with human arrival. There’s also a pleasant library full of books about nature and the area. You can get to Abisko by your own car, train, or bus.

”Did you know that in the area around Björkliden and Abisko, there are plenty of mountain orchids? And that Mount Njulla is sometimes called the flower mountain due to its rich biodiversity.”

Swimming

On a truly warm day, a refreshing dip can be the absolute best, and younger ones often think it’s a great idea, even if their lips turn blue. The best places to swim with children are in Badsjön (The Bathing Lake) or down by the beach at Lake Torneträsk. Feel free to bring a picnic and turn the swim into an outing where you can explore the area around the water. Descriptions of how to get to the bathing spots can be found under “Bathing Spots.”

Geocaching

In and around Björkliden, there are a number of so-called geocaches. It’s a form of treasure hunt using GPS that exists worldwide. It’s based on containers hidden outdoors, which can be in nature or in developed areas, that you can find using GPS coordinates. In each container, there’s a logbook and written instructions on what to do with the treasure. When you’re done, you usually leave everything as you found it; sometimes you swap something out or add your own item. What’s needed to start is a GPS or the ability to read GPS files, and an account, which is free. You can find more information about where they are hidden and create a user at geocaching.com.

Fishing

As a child, successfully catching your first fish can be a lifelong memory. The fact that mountain fish are incredibly tasty doesn’t make it worse. In the lakes around Björkliden, you can catch Arctic char, trout, and grayling, among others. Within walking distance are Crater Lake (Kratersjön), Lake Torneträsk, and Badsjön (Bathing Lake). We arrange guided fishing tours where an experienced guide takes you to selected fishing spots and helps you with what you need to consider. If you want to fish on your own, fishing equipment is available for rent if you haven’t brought your own. If you choose to fish in Badsjön, please choose the far end, as the near end (southern, by the house) is used for swimming. If you’re traveling by car, there are plenty of lakes just northwest of Björkliden. We’re happy to help you with advice if you come by our reception or speak with the guides. Remember that you must have a fishing license to fish here; you can obtain one on-site, or you can buy it online by searching for “fishing license Kiruna kommun.”
