An avalanche course is one of the most important investments you can make for your mountain adventures. With the right knowledge, you’ll feel safer in the terrain, make better decisions, and be better prepared to help others if an accident occurs. Together with experienced and certified instructors from Kiruna Guidebyrå, you’ll spend two intensive, educational, and hands-on days in the mountains. What You Will Learn

The course follows SVELAV Freeride Level 1 and is designed for those who want to develop their off-piste and mountain skills. Over two days, theory is combined with practical exercises in real terrain.

You will learn, among other things:

  • The basics of avalanche formation and risk factors

  • How to read avalanche forecasts and make better decisions

  • Route choice, terrain assessment, and group communication

  • Companion rescue using transceiver, probe, and shovel

  • Practical exercises in a mountain environment

Who Is the Course For?

  • From 16 years of age

  • You should be able to ski or snowboard in off-piste terrain

  • Prerequisites: SVELAV Intro or basic avalanche knowledge, e.g. SVELAV’s online course

Requirements, Equipment & Preparation

Before the course, you will participate in a mandatory digital pre-meeting (1 hour) and watch SVELAV’s introductory videos. A participant list will be sent to the instructor before the course starts.

Included in the course fee:

  • Any course literature

  • Loan of transceiver, shovel, and probe

  • Personal accident insurance during the course

Not included (bring your own):

  • Skipass

  • Food and drinks

  • Any accommodation and transportation

  • Ski or snowboard equipment

  • Backpack 30–40 L (avalanche airbag recommended)

  • Helmet, goggles, sunglasses

  • Clothing suitable for cold, windy, and variable mountain conditions

  • Insulating layer + extra gloves and hat

  • Mobile phone & headlamp

  • Thermos and lunch/snacks (or purchase on site)

  • Small notebook and pencil
